New turf filed opens at Rancho Bernardo Community Park

The San Diego Parks Foundation unveiled a new turf field at Rancho Bernardo Community Park on Tuesday, transforming the space into a hub for community activities.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Parks Foundation and the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the grand opening of a newly-renovated turf field at Rancho Bernardo Community Park on Tuesday.

The new turf field replaces the old lawn bowling greens, which had been closed since 2016 due to declining interest and maintenance challenges. Over the past few years, community members, the city and the San Diego Parks Foundation worked together to explore solutions, and ultimately landed on a multi-use field to serve kids and families.

“This new turf space is more than grass — it’s community,” said Leona Sublett, President & CEO of the San Diego Parks Foundation. “It’s a place for kids to play, for families to picnic, for neighbors to connect and stay healthy. It shows how generous San Diegans are when it comes to keeping our parks safe, vibrant, and welcoming for everyone.”

The field will have space for activities like futsal, picnicking and other family activities. The upgrades were made through a $250,000 anonymous donation through the San Diego Parks Foundation.

“This project shows what’s possible when the community and the city come together to invest in spaces that serve everyone,” said Andy Field, director of the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. “We are grateful to the anonymous donor who made this possible and excited to see residents of all ages enjoy this beautiful new field.”
