City of San Diego Park System Facts

San Diego has the second largest urban park system in the United States, serving millions of residents and visitors every year. It encompasses a vast and varied landscape of 42,400 acres of parkland, including 27,109 of open space, 210 miles of multi-use trails, and 9,314 acres of regional, community, neighborhood, mini- and joint-use parks.

These park spaces serve dozens of diverse communities, requiring a constant need for maintenance, investments, and funding. These sprawling park assets not only provide places for play and relaxation, but also support cultural exchange and enrichment, civic gatherings, programs for seniors and individuals with disabilities, and opportunities for at-risk youth.

With public resources stretched thin, thousands of volunteers donate hundreds of thousands of hours annually to support San Diego parks, showing our community’s love for City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department employees and the work that they do.
